Petrol import to Maldives drop by 42%


Maldives Customs Service statistics reveal petrol import to the country from January till May dropped by 42%.

According to the statistics released by the authority for May 2020, Maldives petrol import until the review month was worth MVR247 million.

This marks a 42 percent drop from the corresponding period of 2019.

Moreover, the report suggests significant drop in petrol is directly due to Covid-19 pandemic hitting the economy.

Furthermore, the Greater Male’ Region came under complete lockdown in 15 April further limiting transportation of vehicles.

As the lockdown continued, state placed restrictions for public to go out on a regular basis.

Moreover, under the lockdown state allowed only permitted and seldom venture outside of residences.
