Tourism industry observes stagnancy in May amid border closure


The Maldives tourism industry observes stagnancy in May 2020, amid the border closure.

Earlier, Maldives government made the announcement of temporarily closing the borders of the island nation.

Subsequently, state placed restrictions on all international travels and further made announcement of cancelling on-arrival tourist visas effective since 27 March.

Moreover, the industry reports no new tourist arrivals for May 2020.

On the other hand, tourist bednights for the review period fell significantly.

Furthermore, during the review period the operational bed capacity of the entire tourism industry saw a staggering drop by 87%.

Meanwhile the occupancy rate fell to just 2% in review month from 49% in May 2019.

Overall, for the period between January to May 2020 the total tourist arrivals saw a decline by 49% in annual terms.

The total bednights of the industry saw a decline of 42% in annual terms.
