Maldives tourism industry observes zero tourist arrivals for the month of June 2020.

Moreover, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) in their Economic Update reveals subsequent fall in bed-nights as well.

Earlier the country’s government made announcement of border closure, and cease of on-arrival visas on 27 March 2020.

Concurrently the international carriers to Maldives made a string of announcements over their decisions to temporarily halt all flights to the island nation.

The decisions came in light of the Covid-19 global pandemic, which gave rise to governments across the world taking restrictive measures to contain the viral contagion.

Furthermore, the operational bed capacity saw an 88% drop during review period.

On the other hand, occupancy rate saw a steep decline to just 1% in the month.

In June 2019, occupancy rate stood at 50% which fell to 1% in June 2020.

Overall for the period from January to June 2020, tourist arrivals saw a 56% plunge in annual terms.

Meanwhile the total bed-nights of the industry observed a 50% decline.
