Maldives to Cochin, Ferry Services in preparation

Ministry of Transport is currently entering into final preparations towards commencement of a Cochin-Kulhudhuffushi-Male’ ferry service by end of September 2020.

Earlier during the state visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Maldives, the discussions paved way between the statesmen of both Maldives and India.

In July 2019, Maldives and Indian signed an MoU to commence cargo and passenger services between the two countries.

Moreover, the service will maintain route from Cochin to Kulhudhuffushi to Male’ and back.

Furthermore, Ministry of Transport outlines larger-class ferry’s usage for cargo operations.

Kulhudhuffushi does not hold docking capability for larger-class cargo vessels at the moment.

However, cargo off-load and on-load will continue through usage of tugboats and barges.

Ministry of Transport concurs the first cargo ferry to make berth near Kulhudhuffushi before traveling to Male’.
