Government to license new telecom provider in Maldives


Maldives Government on Monday, 09 November, confirms its decision to provide license to a new telecom provider.

Moreover, Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer during 2021 budgetary confirmation session at parliament mentions the plan as such.

However, the minister held a non-disclosure stance towards exact date of licensing the new telecom provider.

State’s decision to involve a third player in the country’s telecom industry comes at a time when public’s growing woes towards higher prices reach a peak.

Meanwhile, many concur both current telecom providers charge loftier amounts on their services which remain comparatively low across other countries in the region.

Furthermore, many allege both telecom providers held indifference towards public detriments amid Covid-19 pandemic.

On the other hand, both the company’s report strong fiscal performance for Q3-2020.

While Ooredoo reports Q3 net profit at MVR62 million, Dhiraagu reports at MVR158.6 million.
