MPL Chairman resigns post corruption scandal whistleblow

Maldives Ports Limited has come under media fire following a whistleblowing act from one of the organization’s top brass members.

Mohamed Zaki, who has been filling the company’s Chairman’s designation stepped down from his role at MPL following his whistleblower move.

Zaki made the scandal public on social media, directing towards an illicit transaction worth MVR8 million.

Earlier, on Monday Zaki made his decision public by confirming it to local media.

Moreover, the outgoing chairman while tweeting about the corruption scandal apologized to the public for coming short in apprehending the culprits.

However, following the incident going public reports confirm all MPL staff involved in the act have since been suspended.

Furthermore, Zaki confirms the corrupt scandal involves employees of Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM) as well.

In his statement earlier, Zaki claims three of the board members voted to suspend the alleged individuals in the scandal while four other board members voted against it.

Meanwhile a statement from MPL confirm the transactions took place during lockdown in Greater Male’ Region – earlier in 2020.

Folowing the incident, internal audits indicate further discrepancies.
