Majority of Resorts Concentrated in Greater Male’ Region

Tourism Ministry’s statistics have revealed that majority of tourist resorts in the country are concentrated in the greater Male’ region.

Statistics published by National Statistics Bureau shows that the greater Male’ region has forty-five resorts with 10,094 beds – placing 34 percent of tourist resorts in Kaaf Atoll.

Alif Dhaal Atoll has the second highest concentration of tourist resorts, with seventeen resorts with 4,036 beds. Lhaviyani Atoll came in third with 2,562 beds in nine resorts. Alif Alif Atoll and Baa Atoll placed fourth with thirteen resorts and 2,562 beds.

Raa Atoll has a total of 1,616 beds in six resorts while Noonu Atoll has 1,176 beds and Dhaal Atoll has 1,512 beds and Gaaf Alif Atoll has 616 beds in six resorts. Gaaf Dhaal Atoll has 550 beds in three resorts while Haa Dhaal has 594 beds in three resorts. Vaavu Atoll and Meemu Atoll has the least concentration of resorts with 434 beds in two resorts in each atoll.

Atolls with one resort:

  • Faafu Atoll: 250 beds
  • Thaa Atoll: 152 beds
  • Laam Atoll: 194 beds
  • Several new resorts are set to be open in different atolls this year. Resort beds in Maldives are at 41,000 at present, with the state announcing 23 new resort openings in the next two years.
