Over 755K holidaymakers visit Maldives by August end

The latest Maldives Tourism Bulletin from Ministry of Finance confirms the total tourist arrivals to Maldives reached 755,966 by the end of August 2021.

Moreover, as per the ministry this arrival total indicates an increase of 92.7% in terms of year-on-year tourist arrivals – when compared with the corresponding period of 2020.

Statistics from the state body also confirm that the total tourist arrivals to Maldives exclusively in August reached 143,599 marking a 3.1% increment in comparison with the same month in 2019 and a significant improvement of 1780.5% when compared with the same month in 2020.

Meanwhile, the daily average of tourist arrivals in August stood at 4,632 while the average duration of stay increased to 9.6 days in the review month from 9.1 days in July.

The travel trends, focused towards Maldives tourism indicate significant growth from the regions of Africa, Middle East and the Americas which are as follows;

  • Africa – 373.2% growth by August 2021 – 16,703 arrivals (6,458 arrivals in 2020)
  • Middle East – 293.7% growth by August 2021 – 61,945 arrivals (26,288 arrivals in 2020)
  • The Americas – 135.5% growth by August 2021 – 46,977 arrivals (32,090 arrivals in 2020)

Meanwhile, the top source markets to Maldives continue to stick to their previous rankings with Russia and India taking the top two positions. The details of source markets are as follows;

  • Russia – 159,873 arrivals (21.1% of total arrivals – 443.3% growth)
  • India – 157,289 arrivals (20.8% of total arrivals – 349.3% growth)
  • Germany – 43,833 arrivals (5.8% of total arrivals – 52.8% growth)
  • USA – 30,441 arrivals (4.0% of total arrivals – 148.0% growth)
  • Ukraine – 27,098 arrivals (3.6% of total arrivals – 40.2% growth)
  • Saudi Arabia – 25,559 arrivals (3.4% of total arrivals – 245.7% growth)
  • Spain – 21,941 arrivals (2.9% of total arrivals – 452.7% growth)
  • UK – 17,391 arrivals (2.3% of total arrivals – 48.5% decline)
  • Kazakhstan – 17,368 arrivals (2.3% of total arrivals – 500.1% growth)
  • France – 14,573 arrivals (1.9% of total arrivals – 34.2% decline)

Moreover, it was recently reported that the tourist arrivals as of 06 September reached a total of 781,325 while India replaced Russia to become the top source market with a share of 21.5% of the total arrivals.
