Maldives welcomes 1.3 millionth tourist to the country in 2021

Maldives welcomed the country’s 1.3 millionth tourist on Monday, 27 December 2021 despite growing woes of the new Omicron variant globally.

The island nation achieved the feat upon the arrival of Mr. Constantin Stelian Emil, a Romanian national traveling through GullivAir along with his wife and two kids.

Upon arrival, Mr. Emil along with his family received a warm greeting at the Velana International Airport (VIA) which was graced by the Chief Executive and Managing Director of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) Mr. Thoyyib Mohamed along with Ministry of Tourism, Maldives Immigration and MACL seniors.

Mr. Emil and family received gifts from MMPRC, the Ministry of Tourism and other tourism industry stakeholders.

Moreover, this is the second time Mr. Emil had visited the Maldives.

While speaking at the ceremony to welcome the 1.3 millionth traveler to the Maldives, Mr. Thoyyib Mohamed noted the joint efforts of all tourism industry stakeholders to weather through the tough times and achieving several internationally recognized accolades during 2021.

“Despite all the challenges, 2021 has been a great year for the Maldivian tourism sector, achieving many milestones and receiving many accolades and awards, one of which was the prestigious World Travel Awards leading destination 2021 title,” he commented.

He also went on to add, “Reaching 1.3 million visitors is not a small achievement considering how volatile the global tourism situation has been throughout the year.”
