Tourist arrivals exceed state projected target in 2021

The latest updates from Ministry of Tourism confirm over 1.3 million travelers have visited Maldives as of 29 December 2021.

According to the latest statistics, the total tourist arrival to Maldives by the review date reached 1,312,706.

Meanwhile from 01 to 29 December 2021 the total tourist arrivals to Maldives stood at 155,053 which is a 71.0% increment compared to the same period in 2020, where the arrival count reached 90,683.

However, the arrival count for the review period is still 4.2% below pre-pandemic levels; during the same period in 2019 where the arrival count stood at 161,801.

In annual terms, tourist arrivals observed an increase of 138.8% from January to 29 December 2021 when compared with the same period in 2020 while it was still 22.5% below pre-pandemic annual arrival total.

The daily arrival average increased to 5,347 in the review period from 4,824 in November while the average duration of stay increased from 8.0 days in November to 8.4 days during the review month.

The daily arrival average in annual terms stood at 3,616 while the annual average duration of stay is 8.7 days.

India maintains its top source market position with 290,920 annual arrivals (22.2%) and Russia resting at second rank with 220,213 arrivals in 2021 (16.8%). Germany maintains third rank with 94,784 annual arrivals (7.2%).

United Kingdom has maintained fourth rank with 62,188 annual arrivals (4.7%) while USA is at fifth rank with 55,565 arrivals in 2021.
