VIA confirms record air traffic movement on Jan 2022

Velana International Airport has reported on observing a record number of air traffic movement on 02 January 2022.

The news was confirmed through the official Twitter handle of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).

According to MACL, the airport recorded a movement of 826 total flight movements. Out of these, 233 were wheelbase movements and 593 were seaplane movements.

The previous record high was observed during 05 January 2020, during which MACL reported a total of 811 flight movements were recorded.

Meanwhile, tourist arrivals to the Maldives has observed a subsequent improvement as well. In December 2021 alone, Ministry of Tourism had reported the island nation was visited by 164,279 tourists.

Moreover, the total tourist arrivals to the Maldives in annual terms for 2021 reached 1,321,932 which, though is below pre-pandemic levels, is still an excess from the targeted tourist arrival total.
