The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) recovered MVR
3.76 billion in unpaid dues in 2024, reflecting its ongoing efforts to improve
enforcement and ensure state revenue is collected effectively.
According to MIRA’s annual report for 2024, the recovered
amount included outstanding taxes, rents, and various government fees.
During the year, MIRA issued tax filing notices to 52,158
individuals and businesses. However, only 4,311 complied. Despite the low
response rate, the notices led to the recovery of MVR 2.74 billion.
To further support revenue collection, MIRA implemented
several enforcement actions. These included clearing overdue payments, publicly
disclosing the names of defaulters, freezing bank accounts, and pursuing legal
action. The largest recovery came from dues clearance, which brought in MVR
625.7 million. Payment reminders sent to 148 parties contributed another MVR
239.9 million.
Additionally, MIRA froze 501 bank accounts, which helped
recover MVR 109.4 million. The authority also arranged installment plans for
1,029 individuals to facilitate repayment of their outstanding dues.
In total, MIRA collected MVR 28.1 billion in 2024. This
included MVR 22.77 billion in tax revenue—9.7 percent higher than projected—and
MVR 5.33 billion in non-tax revenue, which exceeded expectations by 38.5
percent.
