Bank of Maldives (BML) has
partnered with Parley Maldives to support ocean conservation efforts as part of
its recently launched environmental initiative, ENV POS.
Under the ENV POS program, BML
contributes a portion of its earnings from every transaction made through its
Point of Sale (POS) terminals to fund environmental projects across the
country. These contributions are made at no cost to customers or merchants and
aim to directly support efforts to protect the Maldives’ fragile ecosystem.
As part of the partnership, BML
will support Parley’s work to intercept and export plastic waste for recycling
to countries including Germany, Taiwan, and Malaysia. The initiative is part of
Parley’s AIR strategy—“Avoid. Intercept. Redesign.”—focused on tackling marine
plastic pollution at its source.
Commenting on the
collaboration, BML CEO and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef said, “The ocean
is central to life in the Maldives, yet plastic pollution remains a growing
threat to marine life and our way of life. We are proud to support Parley’s
mission and look forward to launching our new bank cards made with Parley Ocean
Plastic®, sourced from plastic collected in the Maldives.”
Parley Maldives Executive
Director Shaahina Ali welcomed the partnership and said, “This collaboration
will significantly boost our ability to intercept plastic waste before it
enters the ocean and help accelerate the Maldives’ path toward a sustainable,
net-zero future.”
The ENV POS initiative reflects
BML’s long-term commitment to sustainability, allowing customers to contribute
to environmental protection through simple, everyday transactions. The program
is part of BML’s wider strategy to embed eco-conscious practices within the
national financial system.
