Tree Top Hospital successfully completes Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Reconstruction surgery for Maldivian athlete Ms. Aminath Rabaab.
Arthroscopic ACL surgery is done to repair a partially or completely torn ligament. The surgery is conducted by removing the damaged ligament and replacing it with a segment of the tendon. The replacement tissue is called a graft and it is taken from another part of the knee or tendon.
The hospital said on Wednesday that Aminath Rabaab underwent Arthroscopic ACL reconstruction at Tree Top Hospital under the expertise of orthopedic surgeon Dr. Kanninraj Marimuthu. Dr. Kanniraj Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon is specialized in Joint replacement surgery, Sports Medicine Surgery, Shoulder Surgery, and Knee Surgery.
Aminath Rabaab is a 23-year-old talented netball player for the Maldivian National Netball team. She has won a number of local and international awards. She recently won the Best Female Athlete of the Year award at the Maldives National Sports Awards 2022.
However, she faced a major setback after suffering a twisting injury to her left knee which on clinical examination, was diagnosed as a tear in the ACL ligament. The ACL is located in the center of the knee and is essential for the stability of the knee. An ACL tear is one of the most feared sports injuries because it leaves a person vulnerable and can only be repaired surgically. Additional effects of the injury included weakness in the quadriceps muscles.
Rabaab said that Tree Top Hospital’s team has made her journey bearable. and that she was able to build trust with everyone from the first consultation until she was discharged. She further expressed her gratitude to Dr. Kanniraj and the team assured Tree Top Hospital would be her first choice in the future as well.
The hospital said Aminath Rabaab is currently recovering and hopes to return to training with her team soon.
