Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has begun the land reclamation and airport development project in Raa Atoll Alifushi. The project awarded to MTCC is their biggest project so far.
The project was inaugurated at a ceremony held in Alifushi, attended by Alifushi Constituency Member Mohamed Rasheed Hussain, MTCC CEO Adam Azim, senior officials of the company and Alifushi council members.
The airport in Alifushi is being developed by dredging a large part of the island’s lagoon. MTCC said the airport development work will start once the dredging work is completed.
Under the project, 50.4 hectares of land will be reclaimed. In addition, revetment will be installed in an area of 2871 meters to protect the dry land beach. 480 meters of groynes, a runway, a taxiway, a fire pad and roads will be constructed. An airfield lighting system, canal lights, fire fighting equipment and a 655-metre security fence will also be installed.
The Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has awarded the project to MTCC for completion within two years. The project is being carried out on a design and build basis at a cost of MVR 451.6 million.
