The new departure tax levied by the government generated MVR 400 million.

Statistics by Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) show the departure tax collection stood at USD 26 million in the first half of 2022. That is MVR 400.3 million in the six months. Statistics show that in June 2022 alone, the state received USD 3.9 million (MVR 60 million) from departure tax.

Departure tax is levied as;

  • Economy class: $12 for locals, $30 for foreigners,
  • Business Class: $60 for both locals and foreign passengers,
  • First Class: $90 for both locals and foreigners,
  • Private jet: $120 for both locals and foreigners.

The departure tax replaced the Airport Service Charge (ADC) which was levied since 2016. ADC was charged only from passengers departing from Velana International Airport (VIA). However, the new departure tax will be levied even if you depart from any airport in Maldives.

Departure tax estimation for 2022 is MVR 769 million. It is expected to be MVR 874 million next year and MVR 960 million in 2024.
