Velana Int’l Airport new runway operations to begin on October 6

Maldives Airports Company Ltd. (MACL) has revealed they preparing to begin operations of Velana International Airport’s new runway on October 6.

The new runway development began in 2017, including the USD 1 billion project to develop Velana International Airport. The runway project has been completed, with test flights in 2018.

The Instrument Landing System (ILS) was installed on the new runway earlier this week. An instrument landing system (ILS) is a navigation system used to help pilots land aircraft on runways based on weather conditions.

The new runway is 3,400 meters long and 65 meters wide. The Code F level runway is designed to accommodate the largest commercial aircraft currently used, the Airbus A380.

MACL revealed the new runway will significantly reduce the time it takes for flights to land and taxiway at the airport.
