Earnings from Fish Exports Sees a 77 percent Bump in Exports

Customs statistics for the month of April has shown that for the month of April earnings had recorded an increase of 77 percent, boosted by fish exports.

Statistics published by the Customs show that in April 2017 the country exported fish and fish products worth MVR 208 million. This had increased to MVR 368 million this year.

Thailand topped the export market for this period, with 50 percent of exports going to Thailand. Germany, United Kingdom, America and France were key markets for this period as well.

Import value had also increased in the same period. Last year April, imports were at MVR 3.77 billion. In April 2017, this figure was at MVR 3.25 billion. United Arab Emirates topped the list of imports with 21 percent of imports, with Singapore and China at 13 percent and 12 percent respectively.

Due to the increase in imports, import fees and duties had also increased. Compared to April 2017, this year, imports had increased by 31 percent. As such, this year, Customs raked in MVR 262 million as fees and duties. This figure was at MVR 200 million in the same period the previous year.
