Unusual creature believed to be daggertooth pike conger caught in Maldives

Maldivian sports fisherman Ahmed Anwar caught an unusual deep sea eel in South Ari atoll on Monday night.

He reeled in a deep sea creature, believed to be a dagger tooth pike conger, from 270m below the surface.

The creature, recorded in the Maldives, is over six feet long. Dagger tooth congers can live in depths down to 800m.

“Once we put it back on the boat, it tried to bite everything on the deck. It tried to destroy and attack everything.” Anwar told Dhauru news. “I’ve never caught such an aggressive fish before.”

Whenever Anwar captures unusual fish, he takes a photo before releasing it back to the sea. He then does his own research to find out what species he has come across.

Daggertooth pike congers are mainly seen in the Red Sea,  on the coast of the northern Indian Ocean, and in the West Pacific from Inso-China to Japan.
