Since the new runway opened on October 6, 2022, Velana International Airport has set a new record for runway movement on December 22, 2022.
According to the main airport of Maldives, there were 228 total runway movements, including 104 International, 104 domestic, and 20 general aviation, the highest flight movement recorded for a single day since the new runway opened.
In addition, the VIA records an average of 800 air traffic movements per day, according to MACL.
The airport sees high traffic during the year end with tourists arrivals significantly increasing with the holiday season, and locals traveling due to the school holidays.
