MRC’s Turkey-Syria Fund receives MVR2.9mn

The Maldivian Red Crescent (MRC) has raised MVR2.9 million in donations to help the victims of Turkey and Syria following the devastating effects of the earthquakes.

MRC reported that it raised a total of MVR2,990,618.91 from the relief fund opened from February 7 to 14. MRC opened the fund after the International Federation of Red Cross and Crescent Societies (IFRC) issued an appeal for USD200 million in emergency aid to help the earthquake victims.

Moreover, the donations raised through the fund have been handed over to the IFRC.

The death toll from the earthquake on the Turkish-Syrian border has now risen to over 44,000. Meanwhile, emergency responders and rescue teams have said that the death toll is likely to rise as parts of the buildings are removed and cleared. It was reported that a large number of people have been trapped under several collapsed buildings.
