The Maldives government has formulated the policy of using credit cards in state offices and agencies, gazetted on Sunday and put to immediate effect by the Ministry of Finance.
The policy was formulated to enhance government offices to make online payments, especially in situations where it is the only available option. The policy also provides guidelines for state offices on making online transactions via credit cards for budgeted expenditures and expenses permitted by the Public Finance Regulation.
The Ministry of Finance said that government offices in need to make credit cards must submit the relevant form to them to attain permission.
The policy sets out guidelines for government offices on the permitted areas to make payments via credit cards, and authorized personnel to make such payments, and sets out the rules of how the ministry will sanction the use of credit cards.
Moreover, the policy further outlines the punitive measures in place for any violations.
