The State Trading Organization (STO) imported 2 tons of lemon from India to meet rising demands ahead of Ramadan.
STO said that it imported lemon in bulk quantities to enhance affordability for consumers since demand for lemon shot up ahead of the Islamic holy month.
The largest state-owned enterprise (SOE) further said of receiving numerous complaints of heavily inflated prices on lemons. At the time of STO’s bulk shipment, lemons were selling above MVR100 per kilogram.
STO reports it will be selling the commodity at MVR60 per kilogram, which has resulted in a drop in its market price between MVR80 and MVR95 per kilogram.
