Six more tourist resorts are expected to open during various periods in 2023.

So far this year, two new properties debuted welcoming travelers which are;

  • NOOE Maldives Kunaavashi Resort (Vaavu Atoll)
  • Avani+ Fares Maldives (Baa Atoll)

NOOE Maldives Kunaavashi Resort opened on March 15, 2023 while Avani+ Fares opened on March 29, 2023; both are 100-bed tourist properties.

Six Properties Set to Open

  • 400-bed property being developed in R. Kudakurathu
  • 200-bed property being developed in B. Bodufinolhu
  • 408-bed property being developed in Lh. Maabinhuraa
  • 172-bed property being developed in Lh. Dherufinolhu
  • 260-bed property being developed by reclaiming a lagoon in Male’ atoll
  • 200-bed property being developed in ADh. Bodufinolhu

Statistics indicate that the Maldives has over 170 operational resorts which contribute 41,241 beds; which is 68% out of the total 60,514 operational beds from all tourist properties in the Maldives.

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Tourism announced lease of land and lagoons for tourist resort development which attracted significant interest to 2 particular islands. The resorts will be developed in Haa Alifu and Thaa atolls where tourist properties are noticeably scarce or nearly absent.

Following the Covid-19 pandemic, the Maldives tourism industry is the fastest tourism industry to recover in the region. As of April 25, 2023, the Maldives has attracted a total of 661,628 travelers; which is an annual increment of 19.5% compared to the corresponding period in 2022.

Meanwhile, Coldwell Banker Richard Ellis (CBRE), the world’s largest commercial real estate services and investment firm, said investors’ demand for the Maldives is increasing rapidly in light of the high investment returns potential the country possess.

CBRE stated that the island nation’s tourism industry was the first to recover in the region after the pandemic, and was also the fastest growing tourism industry in the region.

Maldives attracted a total of 1.7 million travelers in 2019, while the annual arrival figure dropped to just over 600,000 in 2020 amid the pandemic. However, the Maldives once again exceeded the millionth-arrival mark in 2022 with a reported total of 1.6 million arrivals.
