VIA Runway Slated for August 30th Completion

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) says the new runway of Velana Internal Airport will be completed by August 30th.

Speaking to local media sources, an official of MACL reported that all runway related processes will be fully completed by the end of August.

Construction of the new runway is carried out by China’s Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG). The runway, once completed, will measure 3,400 meters in length and 60 meters in width. The project is valued at US$ 400 million.

The area was previously a wasteland and now is converted an area measuring 62 hectares.

MACL Managing Director Adil Moosa previously said the initiative was a challenging one. However, he said that they were able to carry out the project without disrupting any of scheduled flights.

When the new runway comes into operation, the existing runway will be used as a new taxiway. A new runway will expedite take off by as much as 30 minutes.
