The Maldives government has decided to create a “waiting list” for people based on their need for housing, instead of selecting eligible recipients for each individual housing scheme separately.
Minister of Housing and Urban Development Dr. Ali Haidar, while speaking at the Parliament’s Committee on Petitions said that the current administration was seeking to amend the existing law to establish such a waiting list.
The committee convened to discuss the particulars of a petition filed with them regarding the Gedhoruveriya social housing scheme initiated by the previous government, led by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
After creating the waiting list, the minister said that its entrants would be evaluated at various phases to assess for the change in their livelihood and living conditions. He added that priority would be given to the people on the list, in the order of the most in need for social housing.
The minister further highlighted this attempt was aimed at streamlining the process of evaluating applicants, instead of requiring the prospective applicants to apply for the schemes separately each time they are announced.
“[We can determine] which citizens are most in need of housing and provide them with housing after identifying [them],” the minister said.
