Major perishable imports see drop in December 2023

The major perishable items cleared by the Commercial Harbor saw notable decline in December 2023, reports Maldives Ports Limited (MPL).

According to MPL, the most significant drops were observed in the import of;

  • Pineapple: -29%
  • Cabbage: -29%
  • Banana: -24%
  • Potato: -21%
  • Tomato: -21%

Additionally, import of watermelon saw a 14% decline while eggs, pumpkin, and onion saw 4% decline each.

MPL reports clearing a total of 4,540 containers in December, which is equivalent to 6,443 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). From the total containers cleared in the review month, 2,637 were 20-footers and 1,903 were 40-footers.

The average number of containers cleared daily in December dropped to 146 from 160 in November; a 9% decline, while the average number of TEUs cleared in December dropped to 208 from 223 in November; a 7% decline.
