Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) says that the two new aprons of Velana International Airport (VIA) will be completed next year.
A senior official of MACL reported that work on expansion of VIA was progressing as scheduled. The western apron is to be completed next October. The final layer on eastern apron is ongoing, as per MACL.
China’s Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) is in charge of constructing both the runway and aprons at MACL.
MACL had previously said that once the new apron is expanded to the planned 80,000 square meters, the existing 50,000 square meter runway will be renewed. Once all expansion work is completed, then the runways will be able to cater to at least 21 planes at the same time.
