Maldives’ largest trading company, State Trading Organization (STO), has reassured the public that onions, potatoes, and eggs will be readily available throughout the Ramadan period.
Annually, STO proactively prepares for Ramadan, ensuring price stability and preventing shortages. In their recent statement, they announced their plans to bring shipments of onions, potatoes, and eggs to stabilize the market and guarantee availability.
The first shipment has already arrived and is now accessible through their stores. Wholesale transactions will take place at STO’s central facility and STO Industrial Village.
Furthermore, 11 stores in atolls will have these essential items, with STO assisting in transportation to other islands.
STO is also committed to importing other staple food items for Ramadan, addressing potential price hikes. If essential items experience unreasonable price increases, STO has pledged to intervene.
According to STO and the National Bureau of Statistics, food prices decreased in January compared to December. Despite some items, such as eggs, potatoes, and carrots, experiencing price hikes, STO’s proactive measures are expected to stabilize prices. Additionally, STO is working on importing a shipment of lemons to counteract potential price increases.
STO has announced the selling prices for these essential items: onions at 20 MVR per kilogram, eggs at 1.75 MVR each, and potatoes at 15 MVR per kilogram. The company is dedicated to ensuring that these prices remain stable throughout the Ramadan period.
