BML Appoints Hassan Zareer as Chairperson Following EGM

Bank of Maldives (BML) has appointed Hassan Zareer as the Chairperson of the bank.

BML announced his appointment following tonight’s Extraordinary General Meeting. They also announced the addition of Ali Faris Mohamed to the Board of Directors.

Previously, Yooshau Saeed served as the Chairperson.

Zareer, the new Chairperson, previously held the position of Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation at the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) from August 2010 to September 2019. Currently, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has nominated him for the position of Commissioner General of Taxation, along with former Commissioner General Yazeed Mohamed. Their nominations are currently under review by parliamentary committees.

Since November 2019, he has served as the Director of Finance and Group Chief Compliance Officer at Villa Shipping and Trading Company. He has government experience as well. His career at the Ministry of Finance included various roles, such as Chief Public Accounts Executive and Operations Manager of the Public Finance Reform Project. He also served as the chairman of the Maldives National Oil Company.

Zareer has been a Board Member of Solarelle Insurance since October 2021. BML mentioned that he has extensive experience serving on the Boards of various public and private companies, including the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority, Maldives Tourism Development Corporation, Maldives Post Limited, State Electric Company Limited, and Maldives Entertainment Company Limited.

Zareer holds a Master of Science in Finance and a Bachelor of Accounting from the International Islamic University, Malaysia. He is also a fellow member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, United Kingdom, and a certified member of the Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA), Australia.
