The Maldives government on Thursday, April 11, 2024, confirms the preliminary works on setting up projects to install ice plants in 11 islands have concluded, and were moving towards commencement.

According to the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, the government intends to install ice plants in the following islands;

  • HA. Dhidhdhoo
  • HDh. Kulhudhuffushi City
  • Sh. Funadhoo
  • Sh. Komandoo
  • Lh. Naifaru
  • AA. Rasdhoo
  • M. Veyvah
  • Dh. Bandidhoo
  • Dh. Meedhoo
  • HA. Ihavandhoo
  • GDh. Rathafandhoo

Saudi Fund for Development is set to finance the installation of five of these plants, while the Maldives government will expend finances on its own for the remaining six.

The government will reportedly contract the development of all these ice plants to Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Ltd (MIFCO), due to the corporation’s successful track record of installing ice plants previously in various key locations.

While the Maldives government announced planned development of 11 new ice plants, the ministry said it intends to, and is working closely with MIFCO in resolving the issues faced by the existing plants as well.

The government has installed ice plants in 25 islands so far and the 11 new inclusions to the list aims to enhance access of ice for local fishers to store their catches.
