The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has signed with JV Wisdom-Nego on Thursday for the procurement of 3-megawatt solar PV system. The project is developed under Asian Development Bank (ADB)’s aid.

Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim signed the agreement on behalf of the government, while JV Wisdom-Nego’s Managing Director Wang Tao signed on behalf of the contractor.

The 3-megawatt solar PV system is aligned with the current government’s broader vision of transforming 33% of the national electrical grid into renewable energy sources; a key pledge of the Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Dubbed ‘Magey Solar’ initiative, this renewable energy project aims to introduce alternative energy means for the domestic household use and increase the utilization of renewable energy means towards economical and social progress.

Under the program, the government aims to introduce a solar power system with a capacity of 10-megawatt before the end of 2024.

As per Thursday’s agreement, the contractor will supply 375 systems each for 3-megawatt and 5-megawatt; with the provision of a total of 750 solar PV systems for the households.

So far, 65-megawatt of solar PV systems have been installed across the Maldives; which is 5% of the national electrical usage.
