BML Chairperson Zareer Resigns to Become Tax Commissioner

The chairperson of the Bank of Maldives (BML) Board of Directors, Hassan Zareer, has resigned. This is to assume the post of Commissioner General of Taxation. The Parliament has approved his appointment as the head of the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).

In a press release, the bank thanked Zareer for his leadership and valuable advice and wished him well in his future endeavors.

The BML board comprises eight government-appointed members and three from general shareholders. With Zareer and another member resigning, the BML board now has nine members. They are planning to hold an extraordinary meeting in July to elect new members.

Zareer previously held the position of Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation at MIRA from August 2010 to September 2019. He has extensive government experience as well. His career at the Ministry of Finance included roles such as Chief Public Accounts Executive and Operations Manager of the Public Finance Reform Project. He also served as the chairman of the Maldives National Oil Company.

Zareer holds a Master of Science in Finance and a Bachelor of Accounting from the International Islamic University, Malaysia. He is also a fellow member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, United Kingdom, and a certified member of the Certified Practicing Accountants (CPA), Australia.
