Monorail project awarded to Dubai’s IFZA; main airport’s connection to the planned seaplane terminal

Maldives government on Saturday announced that the monorail project, which will connect Velana International Airport (VIA) in Hulhule’ with K. Funadhoo, to Dubai’s International Free Zone Authority (IFZA).

The announcement was made at the press conference held by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade on Saturday.

At the meeting, the Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed said a “single-track” monorail system will be developed under the project as he added that the government already signed with IFZA.

Meanwhile, another contractor has been awarded the reclamation project in Male’ City, aimed at relocating the fuel farm in Fonadhoo to the capital. The fuel farm is being shifted from Fonadhoo to develop a Special Economic and Financial Services Zone on the island.

The minister did not disclose any details of the contractor, but added the reclamation project was awarded to a Chinese company.

The large-scale expansion project of VIA includes development of a new seaplane terminal and bridge connecting Fonadhoo, Hulhule’, and Male’ City – along with the monorail track and a public transportation system.
