Addu City Council signs land lease for Garment Factory development

Addu City Council and Business Center Corporation (BCC) have signed an agreement on Sunday, June 09, 2024 towards the development of a garment factory in the city.

Under the agreement, the city council will be leasing the land required by BCC to develop the establishment.

Addu City Mayor Mohamed Shuau signed on behalf of the council authority while BCC Deputy Managing Director Samih Adam signed on behalf of the proprietor of the planned garment factory.

The agreement, in line with Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to expand tailoring at an industrial scale, aims to establish a factory providing individuals and local Small-to-Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with an optimum environment conducive for their commercial activities.

BCC also envisions the initiative will reduce reliance on imported garment materials, while pave way for more initiatives of upscaling various other professions to industrial levels nationwide.

Establishment of the factory, under the supervision of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, is poised to provide lucrative opportunities to various crafts-people and tailors of Addu City and the Maldives wholly.

The initiative is projected to boost the comparatively smaller-scaled tailoring activities to become a full-fledged sector in its own right, while benefitting the Maldivian economy.
