Popular fishing competition; Masrace returns for 2024

Ooredoo Maldives on Wednesday announced the highly anticipated return of Ooredoo Masrace for this year.

This annual fishing competition has become an integral part of the Maldivian community, celebrated and participated by locals in droves each year.

Ooredoo promised an even grander Masrace this year, which is set to take place in three different islands across the country – that includes Himmafushi, Naifaru and Thinadhoo City – held throughout August.

Masrace, since its debut has captured the hearts of local communities nationwide, bringing people together through the joy of fishing.

“As an activity deeply rooted in the Maldivian culture, Ooredoo Maldives is proud to host this event that showcases our rich fishing heritage,” the telecom and internet service provider said.

In a press conference held in Himmafushi on Wednesday, Ooredoo Maldives announced its partnership with the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, and opened up registration for interested participants.

“We are excited to join hands with the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources in organizing Ooredoo Masrace 2024. As a community focused company, we invite all fishing enthusiasts to join us and be a part of the biggest fishing competition of the Maldives,” Ooredoo Maldives Managing Director and CEO Khalid Al-Hamadi.

“We are delighted to partner for Ooredoo Masrace 2024, a significant event that celebrates our fishing heritage,” said Minister of State for Fisheries and Ocean Resources Mohamed Mutholib.

“Together, we aim to empower our communities to uphold our traditions and spread awareness on safeguarding our marine resources for future generations.”

Interested participants from across the three islands can register their teams via online portal from July 17 to 24, 2024. Each team shall consist of 8 to 12 members, including the captain and officials.

The competition will commence on the following dates at the islands;

  • Himmafushi – August 9, 2024
  • Thinadhoo City – August 16, 2024
  • Naifaru – August 23, 2024

Ooredoo Masrace 2024 will see a maximum of 16 teams competing from each area. In the case of an overwhelming number of registrations, a draw will be held to select the participating teams while the teams that do not get selected will receive a full refund.

Furthermore, prize worth a total of MVR 126,000 will be awarded which include;

  • 1st Place – MVR 25,000
  • 2nd Place – MVR 10,000
  • 3rd Place – MVR 5,000
  • Best Fisherman – MVR 1,000
  • Best Fisherwoman – MVR 1,000
