The Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Norway’s Flocean to commence a feasibility study for a subsea RO desalination system in the Maldives.
The agreement was signed between MWSC Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed and Flocean’s chief Alexander Fuglesang.
MWSC said the survey will collect technical data to examine the possibility to launch the system in the country, its environmental impact, and the financial requirements for a project of this scale.
As per the agreement particulars, MWSC will relay all of its technical and relevant data to support Flocean’s feasibility, assist the Norwegian company acquire necessary government permits, and provide overall support.
This project aims to enhance water manufacture in the Maldives capable of meeting the demand, eliminate the requirement of large land areas to develop factories, and opt for a more energy-conserving alternative.
MWSC also anticipates the data gathered from the survey will be beneficial in launching other innovative projects as well.
The company further said this project will be an important cornerstone for Maldives’ efforts in realizing UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs) and climate combatting objectives.
