The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), with the aim of increasing the utility provider’s services.

The agreement was signed between STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahmy and NDMA Chief Executive Hisan Hassan.

Under the agreement, NDMA will assist STELCO in risk assessment for the utility provider’s current operational system and procedures. NDMA will also conduct survey to analyze the limitations and room for improvement in the existing crisis management framework of STELCO.

NDMA, with expert help, will analyze the crisis management system, and regulations or policies for emergency situations. The authority will then provide feedback to STELCO on the areas of improvement.

Additionally, a new crisis management plan on the basis of the findings from the analysis, will developed which will include a framework of an internal standard of procedure (SoP) during events of crises. A Company Emergency Response Team will be established as part of this initiative, with the members of this team trained by NDMA.

Under the partnership, NDMA will conduct exercise drills to train STELCO employees to make them ready for emergency situations. Moreover, the emergency evacuation plans will be updated as part of this initiative.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, NDMA Chief Executive Hisan Hassan said, “The role of the companies have been outlined in detail under the Crisis Management Act, and the areas of their assistance to NDMA during crises. However, we faced several challenges in such efforts in the past years, but with this partnership signed today, we will be able to expand our efforts in collaboration with STELCO.”

He further highlighted the importance of STELCO’s services, and emphasized that the utility provider is required to continue providing its services during crisis events. He noted the importance of training STELCO’s staff to ensure they are ready and capable of handling tough situations in the case of crises.
