Women on Board (WoB) has welcomed the pledge made by the President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom, that he will ensure a fifty percent female representation on boards of all state owned enterprises.
In a statement released by the organization, which champions for increase in female partnership on Boards, the organization welcomed the decision. The statement noted that this pledge was in line with the aspirations and goals of WoB, as well.
In his pledge, the President further elaborated on the capacity of Maldivian women to take leadership positions in all spheres of activity including the Parliament, where women are capable of trailblazing a more effective political culture of law-making. Although he declared this to be his vision, he was quick to point out that getting women elected to the Majlis is the responsibility of the citizens of the Maldives.
‘We, at Women on Boards (WOB), acknowledge with gratitude the recognition given by His Excellency the President to the vital role women are capable of playing as paradigm pioneers in an emerging economy such as ours. We applaud his pledge to make an executive decision to implement gender diversity at the highest level of policy-making at SOE’s for the benefit of future generations. WOB wishes to assure its support on all fronts to complement the government’s efforts by continuing our mission to encourage and develop a cadre of accomplished women who can be effective at board level in organizations. Taking a lead from the President’s pledge, it is also our wish to see a fifty percent women’s representation in the cabinet during the next presidential term,’ the statement read.
WoB thanked the President for his initiative on the role, adding that his support and encouragement was greatly appreciated.
‘It has been three years since we began this movement to develop and empower women through the WOB platform, and we hope to continue with the support of the government and other stakeholders in our efforts for the sustainable development of Maldives,’ the statement further noted.

WoB is supported more than 20 corporate partners and boasts a membership strength of over 200 members. WoB members include experienced and highly qualified female and male professionals in the Maldivian financial sector.
WoB is in partnership with local and international parties who supports women empowerment and development.
