Preparations are on route as Velana International airport prepares to land the largest aircraft on 18th September on the new runway.
Etihad Airways A380 – 800 is the largest airbus to land in Maldivian history and it will be led by the only Maldivian Pilot with a license for an Airbus A380 flight. This mega aircraft is designed with a double deck to hold a capacity of 868 passengers.
The new runway which stretches to 3400 meters in length and 60 meters in width was developed by a Chinese company, Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG). The runway project was awarded to this company for USD 400 Million.
Moreover, the Maldivian government had reclaimed 62 hectors of land where an area of 3,300 meters was sheet piled for the runway project (this is about the size of 100 football stadiums). The land reclamation project was undertaken and completed by Gulf Coblar Company within a short period of time.
