VIA sees record number of flights

Velana International Airport (VIA) saw a record number of flights landing this year.

According to a statement released by the Maldives Airports Company (MACL), there has been a record number of runway movements on 24 February this year. MACL elaborated that there were 219 movements recorded that day, which included 93 international flights and 111 domestic movements.

The previous record was set at 214 flights, which was set on 6 January of this year.

Last year’s December saw 110 international flights and 102 domestic flights, including seaplanes. However, there were 531 seaplane movements recorded on 3 February alone, which was a 3% improvement from the previous record of 517 seaplane movements.

The number of tourist arrivals in the Maldives has also seen an increase. Last year saw the arrival of 1.4 million tourists and the government aims to increase that number to 1.5 million this year.
