Exports rise by 39% in March 2019

The level of exports in March 2019 was 39% higher than in March 2018.

According to the statistics released by Customs, a total of MVR 246 million worth of goods were exported in 2018. A noticeable increase was seen in March 2019, where a total of MVR 341 million worth of goods were exported.

The data further reveals that the Maldives has imported a total of MVR 4.5 billion worth of goods in March 2019. This is a 9% increase from March 2018, where a total of MVR 4.1 billion goods were imported. Out of the goods imported, 16% of the goods were imported from Singapore, 15% if the goods were from UAE and 12% of the goods were from China. One of the countries that made it on to the top five most imported countries was Ireland, which was a country that was not on the list previously. A total of MVR 345 million worth of goods were imported from Ireland.

Customs further stated that the reason that Ireland made it on the list was due to an aircraft imported to the Maldives. However, it was not explicitly stated which company imported the aircraft to the country.
