Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has stated that the funds required for the airport terminal construction has been secured, and construction will begin soon.

The terminal construction project will be carried out by multinational construction conglomerate Saudi Binl Laden, who were awarded the project in May, 2016. Till date, MACL has announced a few dates for the construction, but faced delays due to lack of funds.

“Even though we are not able to start the project on the said date sometimes, we are continually working on the projects. We have planned the project so that we will be able to catch up with the time we have lost,” Adil Moosa stated.

He added that MACL will announce the project dates once it has been confirmed.

The majority of funds for the terminal development project are being given by Saudi Fund for Development, according to Adil Moosa.

The terminal development project will see a state-of-the-art airport terminal built at Velana International Airport that can serve up to 7 million arrivals a year.

The new terminal – to be constructed south of the current international terminal – is set to be completed by 2019. Once the new terminal opens, the existing one will be used as a domestic departure terminal.

MACL is also running projects to build a new 3400 meter runway at VIA.
