MNU signs MoU with CSEC Sri Lanka

The Maldives National University (MNU) on 10 June 2019 has signed on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Civil and Structural Engineering Consultants Private Limited (CSEC) of Sri Lanka.

The MoU was signed between the two parties as a means for CSEC to collaborate with MNU in “contributing towards areas of engineering, science and technology.”

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Managing Director of CSEC Mr Shiromal Fernando said “CSEC is excited to contribute to the growth and development of young Maldivian minds in the field of engineering, as part of our holistic presence and operation in the Maldives. Knowledge-sharing through our guest speakers’ programmes and introducing modular construction technologies, sustainability and green technologies opens up a vast amplitude of possibilities for the construction industry and future professional in the Maldives.”

As per the MoU, the signatories will be working together on research, teaching and training as well as internationalization. In addition to this, the arrangement will also see that the exercise of best practices and global standards are compliance within the industry.

The MoU comes as result of discussions between the two parties during CSEC’s visit to MNU earlier this year in January. During the discussions, the former had “unveiled possibilities for providing assistance in developing the engineering curriculum and initiating new courses like Modular Construction at the MNU.”

Furthermore, the prospect of providing scholarships for undergraduate engineering students with exceptional performance as well as students seeking to complete their internship requirements were explored during the discussions.

The collaboration between CSEC and MNU includes ‘Continuing Professional Development’ which comes as part of ongoing training and capacity building for MNU faculty members. The activities under this entails arrangement of visiting lecturers and guest-speakers to conduct symposiums and lectures.

The discussion had also explored on establishing a distant education (e-learning) platform in Maldives through the collaboration between MNU and the Open University of Sri Lanka.

Other things discussed include the development of engineering curriculum and introducing new courses, implementation of joint research projects and joint publications as well as the implementation of mutual training programs.

Additionally, the exchange of information and materials of mutual interest and hosting of international conferences were discussed between CSEC and MNU when the former had made the visit in January.

CSEC is a state-of-the-art consultancy firm that includes internationally acclaimed structural engineers in the industry and academia.

Some of the key landmark projects developed by CSEC in Sri Lanka include Colombo Lotus Tower, Krrish Square, Cinnamon Life, Colombo City Centre, Prime Grand, Pearl Grand and Avic Astoria Apartments. The firm is officially represented in Maldives by 960 Holdings Private Limited.

The firm has also had notable projects in Maldives added to its portfolio which includes the Vakkaru Luxury Resort and Nasandhura Residencies.
