The Ministry of Tourism has banned the importing of sand from other islands to create the beaches of resorts.
The Ministry stated that the decision was made to protect the various types of marine life in the Maldives, along with the delicate ecosystem they live in.
Though a regulation to allow resorts to import sand from reefs and lagoons to create and beautify their beaches was established in 2017, it has been overturned as of today.
The Ministry went on to state that there has been an increase in complaints that certain operators in the tourism industry have been complacent about conservation and have acted beyond the scope of regulations, adding that such parties would be penalized in the days to come.
A circular regarding this topic had been released by the Ministry last April and May. However, the Ministry stated that there are still offenders within the tourism industry.
