Regional Airports have announced for surveyors for an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) following decision to develop an airport in Maafinolhu near Hoarafushi in Haa Alif Atoll.
A Regional Airports official stated that the Maafinolhu airport project requires land reclamation in the lagoon, and therefore they are looking for surveyors to assess the impact of reclamation in the area.
Regional Airports is inviting interested parties to clarify information regarding the project on Sunday, and place estimation by the 25th of this month.
Earlier this year, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Qayyoom stated that Maafinolhu airport construction will commence this year, during the Presidential Address. The President also announced that domestic airports will be constructed in Kulhuddhufushi in Haa Dhaal Atoll, Funadhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, Maafaru in Noonu Atoll and Maavarulu in Gaaf Dhaal Atoll.
The government has contracted Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) with the land reclamation and runway project for Kulhuddhufushi, Funadhoo and Maavarulu airport.
