State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has announced the power grids of Male’ Hulhule’ and Hulhumale’ will be connected by mid-2020 and networking the interconnecting cable will be completed.
STELCO has now started the establishment of 3 substations to network the electricity of the 3 islands as part of the efforts to provide uninterrupted electricity to the growing population in the Greater Male’ Region.
The company has projected to cater electricity to the three islands using the main powerhouse in Hulhumale’ which is capable of generating electricity between 50 megawatts and 100 megawatts. STELCO regards the Fifth Power Project as an important milestone in the development of the country’s power sector as the project is the largest power project conducted in the Maldives.
The USD 79 million project initiated by STELCO in Hulhumale’ is contracted to Dongfang Electric International Corporation.
STELCO aims to assure electricity coverage for the next 10 to 20 years, upon completion of this project. The project is funded by a loan arranged from the Exim Bank of China.
