Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) says their earnings from cargo operations has increased by 300 percent in the past five years.

Presently Velana International Airport (VIA) currently processes less than 60,000 tons annually.

However, with the new cargo complex, amounting to 12,000 square feet, MACL expects the cargo operations capacity to increase to 120,000 tons.

MACL Managing Director Adil Moosa, speaking in the ceremony held to kick start the new complex at the end of January, said the amount of cargo processed by the airport had increased in the past five years.

‘From 2013 to 2017, the industry had developed. Statics for the period from 2013 to now, show that earnings had increased by 300 percent; this proves that cargo operations had expanded,’ Adil said.

The new cargo area will boast a new import export terminal, office complex, cargo terminal and a cargo jetty equipped with loading and unloading facilities.

The new complex is being developed by Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG), along with the second runway of the airport and fuel farm.
