The land reclamation preceding the construction and development of an international commercial gateway at Gulhifalhu has been awarded to Boskalis Westminster Consulting.

The project of land reclamation for the commercial harbor has been awarded at a project cost of USD53 million.

Director General, Infrastructure Department of Maldives Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure, Ms Fathimath Shaanaa Farooq signed on the project agreement on behalf of Maldives government while the Area Manager of Boskalis Mr David Boustead signed on behalf of the contractor.

According to the ministry, the contractor was awarded the project of reclaiming 16 million cubic meters of land as part of the first phase of Gulhifalhu commercial harbor development project, on 17 October 2019.

The contractor has been assigned with a duration of 180 days to complete their awarded project.

The globally renowned company with a massive portfolio in large-scale land reclamation projects, Boskalis is not a new firm to undertake a local project in Maldives. The company had reclaimed a complete total of 198 hectares of land in at least 10 local inhabited islands between 2007 and 2015.

The firm is also credited with the first application of a trailing suction hopper dredger for a project in Maldives.

Earlier the main consultancy firm with project oversight on design, implementation and framework for the development of the commercial harbor was founded in a joint venture between Denmark’s Niras and Netherland’s Maritime Transport Business Solutions.

Sub-consultants for the project include three local firms; Water Solutions, Clear Reign Maldives and Beach Rock Ventures.

The Maldives government aims to complete Gulhifalhu commercial harbor and open the gateway officially by 2022 following project completion in the said year.
