Maldives Airport Company Limited (MACL) says new runway of Velana International Airport (VIA) will undergo an upgrade in February.
As part of the upgrade to the new runway, asphalt will be laid.
MACL had issued a series of photographs showing the progress of the runway project.
Reporting to local media sources, MACL General Manager Corporate Communications Hassan Areef reported the foundation of the runway was complete, adding that runway would now be visible because of the foundation.
Test flights can begin near end of year, with the runway fully operational soon after, he added.
The new runway at VIA measures 3.4 kilometers in length and 60 meters in width. When the new runway is opened, the present runway will be used as a taxiway.
